Assistant Naturalist
The position will begin at the end of May. This is a

General Description:
The Marine Education Center in Mamaroneck, NY is looking for an Assistant Naturalist with interest and experience in scientific outreach and education. The Assistant Naturalist will assist and help implement new programs to expand the center. The Marine Education Centers mission is to develop and deliver hands-on marine educational programs for schools and the general public to promote knowledge, conservation and stewardship of the local Long Island Sound ecosystem and our local marine environment and marine resources The Assistant Naturalist will be responsible for leading marine science related education programs with students, campers and aquarium guests, facility maintenance (aquaria, live animals, scientific equipment, education spaces, etc.), collecting live animals from the field, regularly interacting with guests and developing new and exciting marine science education experiences and programs.  The position will begin at the end of March 2021. This is a seasonal position. No vacation can be taken from May-September.  
 
 
Qualifications:
  • Degree in a biology, marine science, environmental science, environmental studies or related field (applicants without a finished degree can be considered if the applicant possesses relevant teaching/scientific experience or coursework).
  • Education/teaching experience, preferably in both indoor and outdoor settings and preferably with a variety of age groups (K-12).
  • Motivated self-starter with capacity to work productively in a team setting with the ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude
  • Experience with working with and handling live marine animals and maintaining live animals in aquaria.
  • Experience with collecting live animals in the field in adverse weather and environmental conditions.
  • Experience with identifying local fauna and flora is preferred but can be substituted via demonstration of proper identification skills.
  • Experience with data management and Microsoft software.
  • Preference will be given to those applicants with significant scientific outreach experience, particularly for applicants who have experience in independently developing scientific education and outreach lessons and programs.  
 
 
         Duties:

  • Assist with creating and implementing on-site, standards-based nature and environmental education programs (outdoor and indoor) within an education team framework
  • Travel to classrooms and outside school districts to provide outreach educational programs
  • Assist with volunteer and intern management
  • Assist in creating and implementing new exhibits and projects for the Marine Center
  • Assist in collecting live animals in the field
  • Daily care of live animal collection, including feeding and cleaning
  • Assist in Facilitation of on-site outreach programs for scout groups, clubs, etc.
  • Assist with presenting at local science education fairs and expos
  • Providing customer service to Marine Education Center visitors and program participants
  • Assist with writing social media posts and support monthly news publications
  • Promote the Marine Education Center’s mission, and encourage tour participants and MEC visitors to support the Program
  • Must have a valid driver license and personal vehicle
 
 
 
This highly demanding, but rewarding, job best fits individuals who work well independently and as part of a team. Candidates must demonstrate problem solving skills, time and group management skills, and enthusiasm for education and the environment. Candidate will be expected to work weekends.

Paid Internship
Part-time, Temporary-Begins in June until August

General Description
Interns are the first people the public meet when entering the Marine Education Center. You must be prepared to represent the Marine Education Center in a positive way. Enthusiasm for the Marine Education Centers mission and an appreciation of the Long Island Sounds natural and cultural heritage are a definite plus. This is a great position for anyone interested in a career in education. The objective of this internship is to provide hands-on experiences through interpretation and educational programs and to encourage a greater understanding of our natural resources and environmental stewardship.
Schedules will be 30 hours per week, Wednesday through Sunday but will vary in the length of work day and start time.Ideal candidate is 18 or older and in school for biology or related field.

Qualifications
Applicants must have the ability to perform the physical duties of the position including being able to work in all kinds of weather, over different types of terrain, and with ticks and other biting insects. Applicants must be able to work with minimal supervision, be very independent and easy-going, and be able to work with the public of all ages in a professional manner. The individual must enjoy and be comfortable working with people of varied backgrounds and ages in a variety of outdoor settings. He/she must have the ability to translate knowledge of ecology and coastal issues into basic terms and engaging activities. He/she must have an interest in teaching students of all ages. Willingness and enthusiasm to work as a team member or independently in a variety of situations with diverse audiences is critical. Professional appearance (while working outdoors) is required. Must be willing to work in hot and humid weather, which is common outdoors during coastal summers.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Able to use a computer.
- Ability and willingness to work with children and adults of all ages.
- Knowledge or willingness to learn the Long Island Sound marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
- Intern must be able to work independently and complete programs/projects successfully.
- Must be able to speak clearly and be comfortable with public speaking.
- Demonstrate positive teamwork skills and maintain clear verbal and written communication with staff.

Considerations/Possible Duties

- Interacting with the public by conducting natural tours.
- Assisting with educational programs for youth and camp groups.
- Assists in maintenance of saltwater aquarium and responsible for the care and feeding of marine life.
-Maintains daily cleanliness of Marine Education Center.
-Assisting in direction of volunteers.
-Assisting naturalist with daily specimen prep.

Motivated candidates will have the opportunity to assist in developing new projects in cooperation with the Naturalist. The purpose of these projects will be to benefit the educational component for visitors of the center as well as local flora and fauna. The intern will be able to help direct ideas for small projects as well as aiding predetermined ones.
